REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Must be a Varsity level athlete in Track and Field
  2. Must be a returner to Track and Field
  3. Must be available and attend practice and meets
  4. Must be available to participate in weekly captain meetings

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Participation in League Finals
  2. Participation in CIF

PREFERRED QUALITIES:
  • Dedication - A captain actively puts in extra time into learning about the sport/event as well as improving their skills in the off-season. During season, a captain attends all practices and meets, arrives early to practice and helps sets up, and spends extra time after to clean up and assist other athletes.
  • Inspiration - A captain understands the necessity to create an environment that promotes the growth of every athlete and teammate. A captain can reach out to all teammates, support every teammate, and ensure that all athletes in Track and Field are feeling a part of the program. A captain treats every athlete like family, respects everybody's differences, and demonstrates empathy as well as celebrates all successes.
  • Humility A captain understands that although Track and Field is heavy on individual accomplishment and achievement, their place is to facilitate the growth of the program, to put the goals of the team above their own, and to demonstrate appropriate sportsmanship in both victory and in loss.
  • Voice - A captain should be a voice for all athletes. A captain understands the role is to work with their fellow teammates as well as our coaches to advocate on behalf of the betterment of the team as well as facilitate the development of the overall program. A captain should be vocal in addressing issues amongst teammates as well as addressing concerns or praise to coaches.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead Warmups and Drills -  A captain is expected to arrive early to practice to help set up and ensure that everyone is ready for practice on time. Captains begin the practice by leading warmups and group-specific drills. Captains will also demonstrate appropriate techniques to the team and restart drills/warmups when not done appropriately.
  • Sets the Tone - A captain will be a vocal leader during practices and meets. A captain will need to display focus, energy, and positivity through even the most grueling of practices or the most disappointing moments of meets. A captain will assist in ensuring teammates are ready, stretched, and warmed up during meets. A captain should raise the level of energy at both practices and meets by encouraging celebration, cheering on teammates, and developing support for one another.
  • Meet Weekly - A captain will be asked to meet weekly with the coaches. These meetings will be a conversation between the coaches and the captains. Captains will be free to address issues, concerns, and comments as well as develop plans and ideas to further the growth of the overall program.
  • Lead Fundraising Activities and Merchandise Purchases - Captains must be active in the pursuit to assist the program's financial health by being vocal leaders in the need to support fundraising efforts. In addition, captains have an active role in the selection of merchandise available to purchase by our athletes and families. Captains will also have a voice in the procurement of future uniforms including design.

SELECTION PROCESS:
All athletes who wish to apply to be a Track and Field captain need to do so by November 4th. Coaches will review all completed applications and assess the totality of the athlete's accomplishments on and off the field as well as the information provided on the application. There is no limit to our number of captains, but we do seek to have at least ONE captain per event group (hurdles, sprints, distance, throws, and jumps). All captains will be selected by November 9th.
