Welding & Materials Joining 2

Course Description

The Welding & Materials pathway provides students with an understanding of the manufacturing processes and systems common to careers in the welding and related industries. The following pathway standards are based on, but not limited to, well established American Welding Society (AWS) EG2.0 Guidelines for the entry level welder.
A major aim of all Career Technical Education courses is to prepare students for post-secondary education and training and to help students make a smooth transition into the workforce. In order for both the people and the economy of California to prosper, it is essential for all students to emerge from schools ready to pursue their career and college goals. Equipping all high school students with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and manage their education and careers throughout their lives will help to guarantee these important outcomes.
Learning the skills and knowledge for creating and sharing work in the Arts, Media, and Entertainment industry sector promotes teamwork, communication, creative thinking, and decision making abilities – all traits needed to function successfully in the competitive and media-rich twenty-first century.
The pathway is a AWS SENSE Level 1 curricular course. Students who complete the required material and test coupons will receive a certification validating their knowledge in welding and manufacturing

Welding & Materials Joining 2 will focus on expanding a student's knowledge and skill in structural welding and fabrication. The second year is vital for the mastery of concepts learned from year one. For this reason, students will spend the vast majority of time welding.
The first semester will concentrate of the completion of a D1.1 Structural Welding Code: Steel certification in (SMAW) process. SMAW is a foundational process for every welder entering the trade. During this time, students will use the skill learned from welding in the vertical (G3), and overhead (G4) positions to complete a limited or unlimited qualification.
Once a certification has been accomplished in (SMAW), students will focus on completing a D1.3 Structural Welding Code: Sheet Steel certification. The sheet steel certification will expand on the sheet metal certification from year one. Structural sheet steel will provide an individual with the ability to use the (GMAW) process where structural welding is required.
For students who have completed a D9.1 (GMAW) and a D1.1 (SMAW) certification, an introduction into (GTAW) will be offered. Learning the (GTAW) process will be the stepping stone for the third year fabrication class
Students who work hard and stay on task during the year, will be able to use the tube-bending and fabrication system for personal projects.
