- No parent wants to believe their child is capable of murder. When we see these types of stories on the news, we shake our heads and think “not my kid”. And consistently we hear about those same children being tried as adults. Let me ask you, if your child committed the unthinkable act, knowing what you know about our child, do you think it would be fair to treat them like an adult? Well, every child is someone’s child, and this barbaric practice of throwing kids into adult prisons for life needs to stop.
- DO NOT COPY THIS INTRO! THIS IS MY WORK!
There was a time in America when we recognized that children were different. That is why the juvenile justice system was created. When the Supreme Court was asked to rule on the issue of whether or not we should allow children to be sentenced to life without parole, the majority stated that “Mandatory life without parole for a juvenile precludes consideration of his chronological age and its hallmark features…” and the court is indeed correct. A child is not a man. A child should be given every opportunity to rehabilitate. A former juvenile court judge stated that she has “seen firsthand the enormous capacity of children to change and turn themselves around” (Garinger). She goes on to explain that in the same way kids are vulnerable to peer pressure, they are also “promising candidates for rehabilitation” (Garinger). This goes to the heart of the matter. Children should be given all the resources available to help them understand what they did, and how to deal with their feelings.
- DO NOT COPY THIS!

42 is a story of personal courage, of people with the guts to stand up against a situation that is both wrong and accepted by the masses. Do situations like this exist today? Do we all face these situations, even if on a smaller stage, in our own lives? Have you ever experienced one? What did you do? Was there something you’d do differently, if, like Branch Rickey, you had the chance to go back and right an old wrong? 150 WORDS REQUIRED. Must be turned in by WEDNESDAY 10/31.

Assignment
Over the past couple of days we have discussed intellectuals and how we define intellect. In a short response of 2-3 paragraphs, explain what Gerald Graff’s point is in his article, and explain whether you agree or disagree with him. Be sure to mention your own definition of an intellectual, and mention the people you identified as intellectuals.
SAMPLE OUTLINE:
Paragraph 1: Introduce Graff and the article and explain his argument.
Paragraph 2: Explain whether you agree or disagree with his points. Try to bring in a quote here (something you highlighted) if you can.
Paragraph 3: discuss your definition of intellectuals and the people you chose.
