Today we concluded the viewing of "Blue Gold". Then we responded to the following: 

 

 

•     Hopefully you have gained some knowledge on water issues that you did not have before. Please respond to the following prompt in 2-3 paragraphs (5-7 sentences each MINIMIM).
•     In your opinion, what is the most compelling or important issue that you came across during this module? We talked about tap water vs bottled water, plastic pollution, Flint Michigan, and water privatization, which leads to water wars. Why do you think this issue is important? What did you learn about it? Will you pass on your knowledge? Do you plan to change any of your habits as a result? Why or why not? DUE AT THE END OF CLASS!

Today was silent reading and then we completed the work attached below. FOURTH PERIOD only got as far as step 2. FIFTH PERIOD did everything because we had an extended period.

Tuesday we read "Prelude: The Barbershop" by Vershawn Ashanti Young. Be sure to annotate the words from the synonym chart from Act. 13.

Thursday we answered these questions from "The Barbershop":

 

PRELUDE: The Barbershop by Vershawn Ashanti Young

•    You might need to read the article again to really grasp what Young is saying. Use these questions to help clarify your understanding of this important text.
• 1. In paragraph 2 Young argues that the black male profile is “stigmatized and paradoxically romanticized”. What does he mean by that? Do you agree? Why or why not?
• 2. Why does Young feel the need to change or alter his attitude and speech patterns depending on his location? Do you do that? Give me an example and explain why you do that.
• 3.  In paragraph 7 Young asks “Did her linguistic performance really have such transformative power?” Reread that paragraph and explain what he’s saying. How could changing the way you talk make you seem more or less powerful?
• 4. Paragraph 16 gives us the thesis of the prelude. Put the thesis in your own words and then explain how you feel about what Young is saying. We all know black men (or know of them) that are academic, smart and occupy high positions in our society, so where do you think Young gets this idea from?

Read the two articles attached and then follow the writing prompt below:

• Read both articles and then respond to the following prompt in a short essay of 3-4 paragraphs (intro, body, conclusion):
• Does rape culture exist in our society?
• Paragraph One- introduce the topic of rape culture and explain what it is. Then give your opinion on whether or not you agree it exists.
• Paragraph two- defend your position with evidence in the form of DIRECT QUOTES from BOTH texts. This means you will have a counterargument in your essay. PLEASE HIGHLIGHT THE QUOTES.
• Paragraph three- conclude your essay by restating your opinion in different words than you used before. DO NOT START YOUR CONCLUSION WITH “IN CONCLUSION”, “ALL IN ALL”, “AS SAID ABOVE” OR ANY OF THAT CLICHÉ STUFF!

3-5 pages in MLA format. 

At least 3 direct quotes from the texts we have read during the module.

• I know Friday’s documentary was tough to watch. Give me your thoughts on what you saw. What did you think of Craig’s decision? Do you think he was a coward? Brave? Something else? What about his family? How do you feel about this entire issue? Please write at least 2 paragraphs and TURN IT IN TO THE TRAY. You have 15 minutes.
• IF YOU WERE NOT HERE FRIDAY: we watched a documentary about a man with ALS who decided to take his own life while he was still able to talk and have some control over his life. He drank a medicine that ended his life while his wife was there to support him. What do you think of his decision? Should people be able to determine the manner of their own death when faced with terminal illness? Explain your opinion in at least two paragraphs. TURN IT IN TO THE TRAY. You have 15 minutes.

Ethos, Pathos, Logos Ad

 

Requirements:

-Create a product not on the market. Be silly and creative; your product does not need to be grounded in reality.

-Create an advertisement for your product using ethos, pathos, and logos. YOU MUST USE ALL THREE!

-Make sure you give us an image of your product! Your ad should be just like the ads you see today.

-On the back of your ad, explain your use of Aristotle’s 3 appeals.

Your letter/statement is due on Thursday. Please make sure you give me the total amount of words at the end of your paper. Please type it if you can.
