Advanced English 9 (Period 3) Assignments

Instructor
Sarah Brust
Term
Spring 2016
Department
English
Description

The focus of the Advanced English 9 course is to expose students to different genres (short stories, poetry, plays, epics, nonfiction, fiction, ect.) These different genres and the context of these various texts will expose the students to events, characters and situations they will reference later in their upper level high school courses, their AP exams and even into college. In this course students will be composing several essays and prompt based writing assignments. This course will be emphasized through class discussion on these genres. Advanced English 9 is a challenging class, as you already know with the summer assignment. You will have homework almost every night which will usually entail reading and completing either a dialectic journal, Major Works Data Sheets and/or annotating the text. This homework will usually be staying on top of your Independent Reading Assignments. The expectation is that you manage your time and study. DO NOT procrastinate as this will affect your work and thus your grade.

Assignment

You can choose to re-do your AP English Literature and Composition 2013 Free Response (Question 3).
Step 1- get your graded/edited copy from the graded work tray and look it over. Ask Mrs. Brust ?s about the comments written (that you might have) at lunch.
Step 2- look at the prompt again (attached to this assignment. be sure to scroll down to the bottom of this document since the prompt is the last page) and watch Mrs. Brust's video with directions and tips. It will be below.....
Step 3- set a timer at home for 40 minutes and write your response. You can not have more than 40 minutes. DO NOT CHEAT ON THIS!!!! cheating will not help you get better and timed writes which you will be doing next year and in the year's to come. You want to get better at this, not just get a better grade. BE HONEST!
Step 4- bring in your new, re-done copy to Mrs. Brust before the end of the day on Friday, May 27th.

Assignment

Here is the Act 4 terms & chart for Romeo and Juliet. Be sure to print this or copy this down tonight for H/W and have this ready when you come into class tomorrow (May 25th). You will do your scene summary for Act 4 on the back.

Due:

Finish reading/Listening to Act 3 this weekend. You will be turning in your Act 2 and Act 3 work on Monday AT THE START ON THE CLASS PERIOD. Act 2 work (scene summaries, Soliloquy/Aside chart and questions #5 & #7 from page 1043. Act 3 work (scene summaries, Allusion chart and questions #2 & #3 on page 1071). Be sure you do each acts work on different papers. Act 2 should be together and act 3 should be together but not mixed.
Act 3 (audio version and text) is down below.
You may also use this link to help you understand the scenes better. DO NOT JUST COPY THE SCENE SUMMARY. Read the scene summary before and/or after just like I do with you in class to make sure you understand it then translate it for yourself, in your own words into your notes. DO NOT COPY!!!! this is cheating. using it to better understand what you read and then writing it for yourself based on YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING is ok.
This does not get you out of reading since you have to complete the allusion chart and answer the questions:)
