Health Office

Health Office
The Health Office supports student health, safety, and readiness to learn during the school day. Health Offices are generally staffed by trained Health Technicians who provide first aid, assist with routine health needs, respond to illness or injury, and communicate with families as needed. Health Technicians work under the guidance and support of credentialed School Nurses, who are Registered Nurses, for health assessments, care planning, medication/procedure oversight, staff training, and consultation regarding student health needs.

Home Hospital Instruction
Home Hospital Instruction is a restrictive educational placement and may not be the most appropriate option for every student. This program is reserved for students with severe medical needs who are temporarily disabled and unable to attend school for more than 20 days, as documented by the student’s physician on the district Home Hospital packet. The structure of the program is typically one hour per day of in-person instruction in the home, up to five hours per week. The school nurse will follow up with the physician to discuss the program and help determine whether Home Hospital Instruction is an appropriate placement. In some situations, independent study or another educational option may be more appropriate. For more information, please reach out to the school nurse at beth.marler@leusd.k12.ca.us or via phone at (951) 253-7250.

Health Screenings & Assessments
The Health Office coordinates required school health screenings, which may include vision, hearing, and other screenings required by grade level or program. Parents/guardians will be notified if a student does not pass a screening and may be encouraged to follow up with a healthcare provider. School screenings do not replace regular medical, dental, vision, or hearing care.

When to Come to School or Stay Home
Families are encouraged to review the district guidance regarding when students should attend school and when they should stay home due to illness. Families may contact the Health Office if they are unsure whether their student should attend school.

Medications, Health Forms & Care Plans
Students who require medication or health-related support at school may need completed forms, physician orders, and/or an individualized health plan. Medication may be administered at school when the required forms and physician orders are completed and submitted to the Health Office. All medication must be brought by an adult in the original container, and prescription medication must have a pharmacy label that matches the physician’s order.

asthma management

special meal accommodation form

Emergency Health Information & Injuries at School
Families are encouraged to keep emergency contacts, medical information, and parent/guardian phone numbers up to date in the student information system. Accurate information helps school staff respond quickly in the event of illness, injury, or emergency. The Health Office provides first aid for injuries that occur during the school day, and parents/guardians will be contacted for significant injuries, ongoing symptoms, head injuries, or situations requiring further medical evaluation. In an emergency, school staff will call 911.

Immunizations

California law requires students to meet immunization requirements for school entry and continued attendance. Families should provide current immunization records to the school when enrolling and whenever vaccines are updated. Students who are missing required immunizations may be excluded from school unless they meet legal exemption or conditional admission requirements.
