IB English HL Year 1 (Period 5)

Course Description

During your two years in the IB English A: Literature Higher Level program, you will be expected to complete a variety of oral and written assessments, which will be assessed both internally and externally. Some of these assessments will be informal and formative; meanwhile, others will be formal, summative assessments scored in class or externally by the IBO.  This course is built on the assumption that literature is concerned with our conceptions, interpretations and experiences of the world. It enables an exploration of one of the more enduring fields of human creativity, and provides opportunities for encouraging independent, original, critical and clear thinking.

April 13, 2020 Update

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all doing well and staying safe! I’m sad we won’t get to finish the year out in person. But, I am still here if you need anything-feel free to reach out to me any time.

There is no way we will be able to complete the Internal Assessment this year. It will be moved to next year and Ms. Manasrah and I will have to meet to figure out how to implement it. This is nothing you need to worry about right now, just try not to forget everything you have read this year! We will let you know when we have updated plans for that. You also do not need to read Hamlet. We read enough books this year already to satisfy the IB requirements. Hamlet was just to give us some additional material and it would have been a great experience to read together, but unfortunately we won’t be able to do that. I believe you will be reading several other great plays with Ms. Manasrah next year so you can look forward to that.

If you are happy with your grade, there is nothing else you need to do. If you want to do extra work to receive extra credit and possibly improve your grade, I will be posting some assignments to our class webpage that you can work on. Listed below are two things you can work on right now and up until June. I will post additional work in the coming weeks. If you would like credit for this work just send it to me as a document or take pictures of your handwritten work and email them to me at [email protected].

Optional Work (you can find the associated documents on our class webpage):

1. Complete the extra credit assignment for Wind Up Bird Chronicle
2. Complete the Passage 10 Commentary-Answer the questions and write a commentary essay

3/25/2020 Update

Hello Everyone,
I hope you and your families are all staying safe and healthy! I'm sure you have many questions and concerns during this uncertain time. We all figuring this out as we go and the circumstances have changed rapidly. I am conferring with Mr. Garrison and Ms. Manasrah about how we should proceed with our internal assessment and any other assignments for this year. I also know that both the IB and the district are still figuring out what to do regarding a variety of policies. I will send you updates both on Parent Square and our class webpage as I find out more information and make decisions on how to proceed. In the meantime, try not to worry too much. We are in good shape as a class and we will get through this together. Take care of yourselves and stay healthy.
Take Care,
Mrs. Ritter
